Why the police helicopter was circling in the sky near Bristol

A police helicopter was involved in the pursuit of a car after it failed to stop for police.

Patrol officers tried to stop the vehicle – a Peugeot - at just after 9pm on Sunday in the village.

Police followed the car from Yatton into Clevedon, but they lost sight of the vehicle.

The police helicopter was hovering over the city at about 8pm (Bradley Darlington)

The police helicopter was also scrambled in a bid to locate the car.

Despite the search, officers were unable to locate the vehicle.

The large police presence in the town and the appearance of the helicopter circling above caused much discussion on local social media sites.

Some residents claimed to have seen a car driving around the rounabout near Tesco the wrong way.

A police spokesman said: “A driver failed to stop for patrol officers in Yatton shortly after 9pm yesterday evening (Sunday 21 June).

“Officers followed the vehicle - a Peugeot car - into Clevedon where sight of it was lost.

“They continued to search for the vehicle, with assistance from the police helicopter, but were unable to locate it and stood down at about 10pm.”
