Why the new series of Educating Greater Manchester was filmed two years ago - and almost never aired

Educating Greater Manchester is back on our screens tonight - more than two years after filming took place.

It is the second time the Channel Four fly-on-the-wall documentary has featured Harrop Fold School in Little Hulton.

Filming took place in 2018, during a tumultuous time for the school in which it was placed in special measures, and headteacher Drew Povey and three other staff members were suspended.

C4 bosses had previously said that the series would not be aired in light of Ofsted's report, which deemed it to be inadequate, but it appears that decision has since been reversed.

The first episode hints that what was taking place in school at the time will be explored in later episodes and opens with a piece to camera by Mr Povey.

In it he says: "At the start of this year I was excited, I had really high hopes, I thought it was going to be our best year ever.

"But then it all went quite badly wrong."

It then cuts to footage of students protesting with signs calling for him to be reinstated, along with audio of a news report about the suspensions.

No further details were alluded to in the episode, which ends with a title card explaining that the school is now under new leadership.

Mr Povey left the school in September 2018. He had been suspended over allegations that some children were removed from the school register, alongside three other staff members.

The school has since been taken under the wing of the United Learning academy trust after being put into special measures.

The opening episode also follows the stories of a number of pupils at the school.

Jacob opens up about his struggles with dyslexia (Channel 4)

Among those featured in the episode are Jacob, who is having trouble concentrating in class and is having difficulties with his dyslexia

After Mr Povey shares with him that he himself is dyslexic, Jacob starts to think about dyslexia in a positive light.

The episode also follows the story of year 7 pupil Lewis, who is found with a fake blunt knife he had brought into school to show his friends.

The remorseful youngster, who is described by the head as one of the 'best and brightest young students'  quickly realises he has made a terrible mistake, and later films an anti-knife video for his popular YouTube channel.

Educating Greater Manchester airs on Channel Four at 9.15pm tonight.
