Why the M60 near Stockport was closed on Wednesday evening

One carriageway of the M60 was closed in Stockport this evening following a four-car pile-up.

The crash happened near the town centre between junctions 1 and 27 of the anticlockwise carriageway at about 4.30pm.

Police and ambulances were scrambled to the scene and the carriageway was closed.

Two men are reported to have fled the scene of the crash.

The motorway carriageway was re-opened about an hour later.

As yet there are no reports on any casualties.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "We were called at around 4.30pm to a report of a four-vehicle collision on the M60 between junctions 1 and 27.

"Two men are said to have fled on foot from the scene.

"Enquiries are ongoing and work continues to re-open the road."

The spokesman also confirmed North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) was also called to the scene although there were no reports on casualties.

NWAS has been asked for a comment.
