Why the lampposts along a stretch of the M4 have been cut in half

Drivers making their way along a stretch of the M4 may have spotted that a large number of street lights are missing.

Around 120 lampposts, which were previously found between junction 38 and junction 41 in Port Talbot , were cut down earlier this year.

The columns were removed by the Welsh Government , due to "structural deterioration" with the area now being prioritised as part of a lighting review programme.

However, nothing has been decided yet, with the review due to end in the autumn, when a decision will be made regarding the the need for lighting in the area.

A Welsh Government spokesman said: "A number of pillars along a section of the M4, between junction 38 and junction 41 showed signs of structural deterioration, and a decision was taken to remove the 120 wall mounted columns.

"The street lighting on the section of motorway between junction 38 and 43 is currently in the Welsh Government lighting review programme.

"This considers both the need for lighting and whether to upgrade to a modern lighting source."

They added: “As part of this assessment the affected section between 38 and 41 has been prioritised.

"The review is scheduled to be concluded by Autumn and will inform the next steps to be taken.”

This same stretch of motorway has been making headlines recently for a speed camera scheme.

The Welsh Government is looking at installing more speed cameras on roads with high levels of pollution. You can read more about that proposal .
