Why the 'honking' Edinburgh University accent is the 'worst thing ever heard' according to locals

Recently our sister title Glasgow Live shed light on an issue which is driving 'everyone in the city crazy', and it made us realise that we may also have a similar issue here in Edinburgh.

Apparently, football rivalry is not the biggest divide within our sister city. Instead, the real issue lies with those who have the 'Glasgow Uni accent' and those who don't.

But according to Edinburgh locals, our rival university here in the capital also has its own accent, and quite frankly, its the 'worst thing ever heard'.

So what exactly is the problem with the 'Edinburgh Uni' accent and why does it drive some people living in the city so crazy?

Well for a start, students in the capital who have the 'Edinburgh Uni accent' are known as 'Yahs' for the way they 'irritate' locals with putting an 'ah' sound at the end of many words (for example EdinbuRAH).

According to a recent Tik Tok trend, becoming a Yah is a slow process that occurs within a year of attending Edinburgh University - and it's not just your accent that changes, but also your sense of personal style.

Recently another TikTok video featuring the 'Yahs' with the 'Edinburgh Uni' accents went wrong for all the wrong reasons, when a group of Edinburgh students moved into their new flat in the capital.

Seemingly, the girls who referred to the capital as 'EdimbuRAH' were also poking fun at the stereotype themselves in a video that suggests that "hummus, chandeliers and plate warmers" are things that just "make sense" to have in an Edinburgh Uni flat.

In a tweet that went viral one Edinburgh local said: "No offence but this Tik Tok made me want to burn Edinburgh Uni to the ground.

She added: "I can't afford to live in the city I was born in whilst uni students can afford plate warmers."

While we will never know for sure why the 'Edinburgh Uni' accent often annoys locals, this gentleman gave a little insight into how he feels about it.

While he acknowledges that the 'Glasgow Uni accent' is not to his taste, according to him the Edinburgh Uni accent is just "honking."
