Why the government will not be getting involved after Newcastle United's takeover collapsed

Newcastle United supporters have contacted the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) following the collapse of the Magpies' takeover - but the DCMS insist the Sports Minister made the government's position clear last week.

Amanda Staveley, Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund and the Reuben Brothers withdrew their offer to buy Newcastle on Thursday because of the 'prolonged process under the current circumstances coupled with the global uncertainty'.

The Premier League, who had been carrying out their owners' and directors' test for four months, have maintained their silence throughout and have repeatedly declined to comment when contacted by ChronicleLive.

Fans are eager for a response and have joined the Newcastle United Supporters' Trust; signed a petition which now has more than 60,000 signatures; and taken it upon themselves to email the Premier League, the Independent Football Ombudsman (IFO) and the DCMS.

The IFO will advise the Premier League to 'explain how the case was handled' but the government have no intention of getting involved.

A DCMS spokesman confirmed to ChronicleLive that they would not be providing any further comment and that the Sports Minister, Nigel Huddleston, had made the government's position clear last week.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden previously said it was for the Premier League to make an assessment on any prospective takeover and Mr Huddleston echoed those words when he appeared on Sky Sports News on Tuesday.

"I'm very uncomfortable with the level of expectation of involvement on government with things that are very clearly decisions for football," he said.

"There is obviously the fit and proper persons test to go through with any acquisitions of this nature and I think that is absolutely appropriate.

"It's something that I'm keeping an eye on but it is a decision for those involved. It would be inappropriate for me to interfere at that kind of level."
