Why the ECHO is joining social media boycott to stand with football against hate

The Liverpool ECHO is proud to stand in solidarity with everyone who faces hate and discrimination online.

Our sports social media accounts across all platforms will be silent from 3pm on Friday 30 April to 11.59pm on Monday 3 May.

We stand with football against hate.

Unfortunately we have seen too many incidences of abuse on social media towards players, officials and many others involved with the game we love and not enough is done to punish those responsible.

Enough is enough. This has to stop.

The clubs in our city and on Merseyside have thrown their support behind the campaign too, with the official Everton, Liverpool and Tranmere Rovers social media accounts also falling silent over the weekend.

In his press conference today, Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti said: "I think it's an important campaign. We have two big problems - racism and online abuse.

"Most people are covered by an anonymous name, this is not tolerable.

"The social media companies need to take action on this. I hope this campaign can help us to cut this abuse."

While Reds manager Jurgen Klopp expressed the same view this afternoon: "The world of a football player is pretty public. Ask players from the past what kind of life and joy they had around games - that has all disappeared. It doesn't happen any more, one of the reasons is social media.

"I support all the clubs (in the boycott). It is a very important thing to do. Things need to change.

"We cannot influence all of it. But as much power we have as a society, we should try to use in this moment."
