Why the clocks go back after Scots are treated to an extra hour in bed

Last night saw Scots get an extra hour in their bed after the clocks went back.

At 2am earlier today, the UK moved from British Summer Time (BST) to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

Those of us in their bed early doors last night wouldn’t have noticed the switch. But if you were still awake, you may have clocked your mobile phone clock jumping back to 1am from 2am.

While technology certainly helps us with the change, more traditional means of telling the time will need to be changed manually.

While most of us are probably not complaining at the extra hour in bed, others will be wondering why we do it in the first place.

The moving of the clocks was first introduced in World War One, to save coal usage. Germany and Austria adopted it first.

It was invented by George Vincent Hudson, a New Zealand entomologist in 1895, while British businessman William Willett is also credited with the idea as a way of getting up earlier and so having more daylight hours after work.

While the UK has always had daylight savings time since it was first introduced, it came into widespread use across the world during the 1970s because of the energy crisis.

We no longer live in the 1970s, so it’s easier for us to remember when the annual adjustment happens - especially with new technology such as smartphones.

And while it sadly gets darker at night, the time change will make those early rises that little bit easier and lighter for us.
