Why the Brit Awards 2021 can have 4,000 people in live audience

The Brit Awards will be the first show in front of a live audience in the UK since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

Around 4,000 people will be attending the show, of which 2,500 will be key workers who were gifted tickets.

The indoor ceremony and live show at the O2 Arena in East London, to air on ITV, is part of the Government’s scientific Events Research Programme.

Event-goers will have to have proof of a negative lateral flow test result to get in and also provide contact details for NHS Test and Trace.

They will even be tested after the event so "further evidence" can be gathered on the safety of such a large scale event.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden explained: “This year’s awards will reunite live audiences with the best of British talent while providing a vital opportunity to see how we can get large crowds back safely as soon as possible.”

Brits chief Geoff Taylor added: “We hope it will provide a path for the return of live music.”

O2 boss Danielle Kennedy-Clark called it “an important step on the path to recovery for the live entertainment industry.”

The world snooker championships in Sheffield's Crucible Theatre is also part of the government's pilot programme.

The evidence gathered from these pilot events will be used to see if venues across England can be opened up.

Under Prime Minister Boris Johnson's phased roadmap out of the third national lockdown, entertainment venues can re-open their doors this month.

Meanwhile, audience members can look forward to performances by Dua Lipa, Pink, Rag'n'Bone Man and Olivia Rodrigo.

Other performers include The Weeknd, Arlo Parks, Headie One and Griff.

The Brit Awards 2021 will air on Tuesday, May 11 at 8pm on ITV.
