Why Tamariu is a Great Holiday Destination

With so many fantastic holiday destinations to choose from, picking the perfect place for your next trip might not be easy. Many people choose to return to places they have been before but risk missing out on new adventures and seeing parts of the world they have never visited.

Even if you have visited Spain before, the vast country has many unique places to visit with different appeals. The Costa Brava may be more known for the lively resort of Lloret de Mar but there are many quieter and more secluded areas along the stunning coastline to explore.

Tamariu, located 90km northeast of Barcelona is less well-known than some of its neighbouring destinations, as it has largely remained a well-kept secret. Often described as a little piece of paradise, if your idea of a great holiday includes breathtaking scenery and golden beaches, then Tamariu could be your newfound paradise.

Aside from beautiful beaches and turquoise waters, framed by the backdrop of the dramatic coastline, Tamariu is a place of cultural wonder. Unlike many Spanish resorts which have succumbed to major redevelopments to appeal to a wider section of tourists, Tamariu is mostly untouched and maintains its authentic origins as a small fishing village.

Here are some of the highlights you will enjoy if you book a trip to Tamariu in the Costa Brava:

A Perfect Base for Adventures

Whether your definition of fun adventures involves scenic walks, boat trips to explore the coastal treasures or more energetic activities like kayaking or paddle boarding, you have all the options on your doorstep. The iconic Cami de Ronda coastal path offers hiking adventures with spectacular scenery, and you can choose between challenging, longer hikes or flatter sections such as the path from Tamariu to nearby Llafranc.

The area is hugely popular with scuba divers and snorkelers owing to the crystal-clear waters and interesting marine life which is easily found from the many beaches around this part of the Costa Brava.

Historic Landmarks and Cultural Activities

You won’t have to venture far to discover some of the cultural delights in the surrounding areas. The Medieval village of Pals is a short drive away, featuring well-preserved ancient buildings and cobbled streets, providing a step back in time. Another top place to visit is Begur Castle, where you will be able to find out more about the historical significance of this impressive landmark.

Art enthusiasts won’t want to miss the chance to visit the Salvador Dali House Museum or the Dali Theatre-Museum, which are also a short distance from Tamariu.

In summer, the area hosts a number of well-attended events including the Cap Roig Music Festival and the Festival Catalonia Habanera. These events bring a buzzing atmosphere, with locals and tourists joining together in the celebrations of Catalan culture.

Captivating Coves and Golden Beaches

What makes Tamariu a truly magical destination is the beautiful sandy beaches and fascinating coves dotted around the coastline. The beaches can get busier in the summer months but if you time your visit right, you’ll be treated to an almost private oasis. You can relax on the pristine beaches, take a dip to cool down in mesmerising waters and bask in the stunning surroundings. Unwind in total tranquillity, find your favourite spot to spend the day or explore the local eateries for a bit of lunch.

Diverse Cuisine

While Spain might be most famous for tasty tapas dishes, in Tamariu there are plenty of additional local dishes to try. Fideuà is a local specialty, described a tastier version of paella, it’s a noodle-based dish typically using locally sourced seafood such as squid and prawns.

The tapas dishes served in Tamariu have their own twist, to give you a flavour of what to expect – Pop and Patata, which consists of octopus layered onto potatoes sprinkled with paprika. The Musclos al Vapor is another popular traditional dish, which is mussels in white wine and lemon sauce.

The serious foodies might want to sample some of the divine Michelin star restaurants in nearby Begur, Calella de Palafrugell or Palafrugell but there are also some excellent choices in Tamariu itself. Highly recommended restaurants such as El Palangui, Es Dofi and Restaurant Es Portio have outdoor terraces overlooking the bay for those who like to take in the views while dining.

Mediterranean Climate

If you’re looking for a warm summer getaway, Tamariu has a hot climate in the summer months, with average highs of around 30 degrees Celsius in months June through to August. Spring and autumn months are generally warm too – April and May, September and October have average high temperatures of over 20 degrees Celsius.

The summer climate in Tamariu is ideal for sunbathing and swimming in the sea, while active holidaymakers often prefer the cooler months in spring and autumn to enjoy pleasant temperatures for walking or cycling, making the Costa Brava a perfect destination for your holidays.

These are just some of the many reasons to choose Tamariu for your next Spanish holiday destination but there are many more reasons that will make you fall in love with this amazing part of the Costa Brava.
