Why Tahith Chong isn't in Manchester United squad for QPR friendly

Manchester United's pre-season schedule is shaping up as they play their second friendly fixture on Saturday afternoon.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer takes his side to Loftus Road where they will play Queens Park Rangers, having beaten fellow Championship side Derby County last weekend.

United secured victory at Pride Park thanks to goals from Tahith Chong and Facundo Pellistri, though the Dutch winger is not part of the squad for the match versus QPR.

That is because Chong, 21, has now officially joined up with Birmingham City ahead of his season-long loan with the club having agreed a deal earlier in the month.

Chong was part of the 27-man United squad which travelled to Surrey for a training camp earlier this week, but left it in order to join up with Lee Bowyer's side.

The young winger spent the start of last season on loan at Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga, before a January switch to Club Brugge in Belgium and will be looking for a successful spell as he enters the final year of his deal at the club.

The Holland Under-21 international made 15 appearances for Werder Bremen between August 2020 and January 2021, but started just four Bundesliga games before switching to Club Brugge, where he made a further 10 appearances.

Chong currently has one year remaining on his contract at Old Trafford, although United have the option of a further year. He joined the club from Feyenoord in 2016 and won the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award in 2019 and the Denzil Haroun Reserve Player of the Year award in 2019.
