Why Sunderland need a win at Scunthorpe tonight for more than just EFL Trophy progress

Everyone knows the Leasing.com Trophy lies way down on the list of Sunderland priorities this season.

After missing out on promotion to the Championship at the first time of asking by the narrowest of margins last season, the Black Cats' one and only focus is a return to the second tier this time around.

That's not to say the cup competitions are off the radar - the run to the final of the competition last term was said to have brought in the region of £1m to the club - but promotion is the top target.

However, ahead of tonight's final Group A game at Scunthorpe, Sunderland midfielder Max Power insists his side need a victory in order to the winning mentality back into the camp.

“We have got to get back to winning games," he said.

"The performance levels have been OK, we know we can improve, and we don’t want to creep into a mentality of accepting draws and defeats.

“We have got too get that winning mentality back and it comes with hard work, believing in what we are doing and sticking together."

The Black Cats must beat Scunthorpe in 90 minutes to progress to the knockout stages of the competition.

Sunderland have won just two of their last seven matches so, while an exit from the EFL Trophy tonight wouldn't be a disaster, a win could set them back on the right path when the League One fixtures kick back in.

“I know it’s all cliché stuff but it is really true," Power added, speaking to the club website.

“It’s tough and disappointing when you come away from today and we haven’t performed as well as we know we can.

“We didn’t win enough battles over the pitch and credit to Gillingham we couldn’t quite deal with it.”
