Why Sunderland have been tipped to throw weight behind government's fan-led review

Football finance guru Kieran Maguire believes Sunderland will back the Government's fan-led review and support proposals in Tracey Crouch’s independent investigation.

The review champions the introduction of an autonomous regulator to safeguard English football and address the financial imbalances in the current modern game.

The proposed regulator would be granted controls to enforce restrictions on spending, such as salary caps, and revise parachute payments.

The Black Cats have one of the biggest financial revenues in the football league, which stood at £58.7million pre-pandemic.

Salford City owner Gary Neville told Sky Sports earlier this month that around 95 per cent of EFL clubs would support the proposals, and Maguire believes Sunderland would be one of those.

“I think they would back the fan-led review," Maguire told Football Insider.

“The noises which are coming out of the EFL are that they want to move to a broadly similar wage cap in the Championship which is linked to revenue.

“Sunderland are a big club in the EFL and they would be able to have more money going into their wage budget than others.

“Their revenue would of course increase if they manage to make it to the Championship.

“Also, the proposals involve a recommendation of realignment of revenue distribution. Sunderland would benefit from that while they’re in the EFL.“
