Why Steve Cooper chose not to use substitutes in Swansea City's 0-0 draw at Cardiff City

Steve Cooper did not use his substitutes in the South Wales derby as he felt Swansea City's starting XI were capable of creating chances to beat Cardiff City.

Bersant Celina struck the inside of the post with a shot in the first half while Wayne Routledge and Rhian Brewster also had efforts for the Swans in Cardiff.

Neil Harris' side themselves could have nicked it, with Callum Paterson hitting the crossbar in the second half, although the spoils were ultimately shared .

The Bluebirds ended the game strongly, with replacements Josh Murphy and Paterson having a strong impact after coming off the bench.

On the flip side, Swansea opted against using any of their seven players substitutes.

And Cooper says he felt confident that those who were already on the pitch were capable of producing a moment of magic against Cardiff.

"It’s not like us to not make any changes. We had some creative players on the bench as well," he said.

"If we were going to change it was going to be a positive one to try and win that's for sure.

"We just felt we would get that one moment with the boys we had on the pitch.

"It’s unlike us not to make changes in any game.

"But like I said, there's lots of positives from the game, two young centre-backs, getting a clean sheet and coming here with a mentality of wanting to win.

"I don't think missed opportunity is the right term because we have to respect the occasion and the magnitude of the game but our main objective was to win."

The draw leaves Swansea in seventh place in the Championship, although they are level with sixth-placed Sheffield Wednesday on 42 points.

Cooper's men return to action against Wigan at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday.
