Why Steve Bruce has rung the changes as Newcastle go for a new look

Steve Bruce rang the changes at Selhurst Park on the back of the 2-0 defeat against Chelsea.

The Magpies named Jonjo Shelvey as skipper while Miguel Almiron, Jeff Hendrick and Javier Manquillo returned to the starting line-up.

The big boost for Bruce was the return of Callum Wilson from a hamstring injury picked up before the international break at Southampton while teenager Elliot Anderson - still just 18 - was named on the bench.

With the squad hit by Covid-19 issues there was no sign of Jamaal Lascelles or Isaac Hayden but Bruce has not confirmed why they were absent.

Newcastle went into the game without Allan Saint-Maximin who had a hamstring injury suffered in training while Andy Carroll was missing with a calf issue.

UNITED : Darlow, Manquillo, Fernandez, Clark, Lewis, Hendrick, Shelvey, S Longstaff, Almiron, Joelinton, Wilson

Subs : Gillespie, Schar, Yedlin, M Longstaff, Ritchie, Elliot Anderson, Murphy
