Why Spurs will have to change the way they defend in the future following VAR penalty decision

The scoreline could have been very different at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday evening had Sergio Aguero scored his early penalty.

Spurs fans inside the club's new home were left baffled as Bjorn Kuipers consulted VAR before pointing to the spot after Danny Rose was adjudged to have handled Raheem Sterling's shot.

What made the decision so puzzling was the fact that no City players had appealed for a penalty as the ball struck the left-back.

Although it was the right call on second viewing, thankfully it didn't prove costly as Hugo Lloris dived to his left to save from the Argentine.

Speaking to the media after the game, Jan Vertonghen revealed it was "extremely weird" to concede a penalty in that way but he believes that everyone will benefit from it in the long run.

"It was very early in the game and nobody expected it as they didn't appeal for it," the defender said after the game. "It was extremely weird to concede a penalty like this.

"That's VAR. In a way it's good.

"I'm not always a fan but at the end, everyone will benefit from it."

"It takes a lot away from the game, I think. But like I said, at the end it will give you more," he added. "It can happen for us as well. If we can get a penalty in this way I would be very happy.

"Football is always a very emotional game and VAR is changing that a bit."

VAR is set to be used in the Premier League next season and Vertonghen believes that it will have a big impact on the amount of penalties awarded and how Spurs and other teams defend in the future.

"I think so many things look like a penalty in slow motion, take the PSG vs [Manchester] United game," he added.

"Everything looks like a penalty now and we have to try and change the way we defend.

"Not pulling people down, but even a small touch if they watch it 20 times in slow motion they will give so many more penalties.

"I think you'll see in the stats in the next couple of years in the Premier League at least 20, 30 or 40 penalties more."
