Why Son-Heung min would be 'punished five times' if Spurs' appeal over red card isn't successful

Jose Mourinho has claimed that Son Heung-min would be "punished five times" if Spurs' appeal to the FA over his red card is not successful.

The 27-year-old was sent off in the 62nd minute of Tottenham's 2-0 defeat against Chelsea on Sunday after kicking out at Antonio Rudiger.

Referee Anthony Taylor initially awarded a free-kick to Spurs following a foul from the German international, yet Son was then given his marching orders after VAR had analysed what had happened between the pair.

His dismissal now means that he will be absent for the games against Brighton & Hove Albion, Norwich City and Southampton unless the club's appeal is overturned.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the Boxing Day game against the Seagulls, Mourinho stated that Son has already been punished twice for the incident and he doesn't deserve for that to happen to him again.

"That’s exactly the point about the VAR. The VAR is for me and Frank Lampard to say yes. So the penalty is for me and Frank Lampard to say yes, a penalty," he told reporters when speaking about the red card.

"With Son, Lampard says yes, I say no, you say you don't know.  Even in this room some of our friends will say yes and some will say no.

"Mr Paul Tierney decides yes and Mr Anthony Taylor who was in the game, in real time, five metres from the situation, Mr Taylor decided no.

"So who was refereeing the game. Not Mr Taylor. It was Mr Tierney.

"I think not a red card, VAR was to support football, to bring true football, to bring true to the spectacle and they did that with the penalty decision and they killed the game with Son's decision.

"I hope Son is not punished five times. One time was the foul that Rudiger did on him. The second is to be sent off. The third would be not to play against Brighton. The fourth not to play against Norwich and the fifth not to play against Southampton.

"So I hope to be punished twice is enough, he doesn't deserve for the third the fourth or the fifth."

Son's suspension will open the door for another player to come in over the festive period.

A key player for the club since his arrival in N17 back in 2015, Mourinho has claimed that the South Korean international will be a miss given their lack of numbers at present.

"It would be a big loss. We don’t have a big squad. We don’t have lots of players," he added.

"This moment is a moment where it is normal to think about rotations and very difficult situations for players to play every game.

"We don’t have (Erik) Lamela and it's a big loss for us. But if that happens then we have to try to cope with it and to fight against injustice.

"But the way to fight against injustice is to give our best and the boys that are going to play are going to try and get results in it."
