Why Sir Alex Ferguson changed how he treated Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United

Former Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic has opened up on the early days of Cristiano Ronaldo's relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo arrived at United as an 18-year-old in 2003 and developed into one of the best players in the world between 2006 and 2009.

The Portuguese won each of the four major trophies on offer to United at least once during his six years with the club, and in 2008 became the first United player to win the Ballon d'Or since George Best 40 years earlier.

In 2015 Sir Alex Ferguson said Ronaldo was one of only four world-class players he managed during his time as United manager but Vidic has revealed their relationship wasn't always rosy.

“I think Ronaldo wasn’t happy when he [Sir Alex] shouted at him,” Vidic told the League of Legends podcast of the early days of Ronaldo's United career.

"In the beginning it was one time he said something to Ronaldo, but he accepted it very emotionally.

“He took it personally, but he was very young - he was 20 years old.”

Vidic added that Ferguson, one of the great man managers, soon learnt that shouting at Ronaldo was not the way to get the best out of him and subsequently toned it down.

“Of course you realise, even me, that next time you will not tell him [if he does something wrong]," Vidic added.

“It’s better to not tell him because otherwise he will be too emotional and he won’t help you be better.”
