Why Simon Grayson felt Blackpool should have left Sunderland with all three points

Simon Grayson left the Stadium of Light with mixed emotions following Blackpool's 1-1 draw with Sunderland.

The visitors had led early on when Matty Virtue beat Jon McLaughlin in the Black Cats goal with a looping shot.

Howwever, Charlie Wyke earned Phil Parkinson's side a share of the spoils when he turned home a Chris Maguire corner before the break - and neither side could add to the scoring in the second period.

But Grayson, who managed Sunderland for just four months in 2017, admitted that while he would have taken a point before the game, his side didn't play to their full potential, and could have made more of their lead.

“I think it’s a good point and we would have settled for a point at the start of the game," the Blackpool boss said.

“Having started the game so well, there is a slight hint of disappointment because the game was there for the taking. If I’m being honest, I felt we were struggling at the top of the pitch.

"We didn’t play with the quality we’ve been playing with in the last few weeks and that final pass or final touch just wasn’t there at times today.

“There were players out there today who just didn’t show the same level of performance we’ve had in recent weeks. We’ve been outstanding lately, and there were just a few things that were missing.

“Overall, it was a good away performance and to gain a point here is impressive."

The draw means Sunderland are now 12th in the League One table, with no game until the Boxing Day clash with Bolton Wanderers at the Stadium of Light.
