Why Shane Lowry’s win at The Open Championship means so much

Shane Lowry won his first career major title on Sunday at the British Open in his home country of Ireland. He collected the Claret Jug at Royal Portrush Golf Club, which is 180 miles from Esker Hill golf club in Clara, Offaly where Lowry got his start in golf as a self-taught protege.

Lowry had a huge smile and a bounce in his step as he walked down the 18th hole on day four. He had a few issues during his final round, but finished with a six-shot lead and always held at least a three-stroke lead on the final day. He logged a one-over-par round of 72 despite the challenging conditions. But it was his 63 on Saturday that put him in a strong position for his final round.

As soon as he won the tournament, the scene at Esker Hill was absolutely insane, with the fans in attendance — many of whom had travelled a lengths to get there — erupting with cheers. The audience at Royal Portrush also seemed to be behind Lowry from the first tee on Sunday. The crowd was so supportive of Lowry that he thanked them on Twitter after his impressive round on Saturday. They gave him roaring applause to start Sunday, and of course, did the same at the end.

Lowry will take home £1.56 million of the £8.65 million prize pot.

Upon accepting the trophy, he grew emotional, and addressed his family. Here’s what he said after the tournament, per NewsLetter.

“My family, what do I say? I have to thnak my mum and dad for all the sacrifices they made when I was younger. I’m so happy to be able to hand them this trophy tonight. To have my wife and daughter Iris here is so special. Also have to thank all my backroom team as I wouldn’t be standing here today without them. And thanks to all the volunteers and fans here, this one’s for you.”

The golfing world was thrilled to see the emergence of the 32-year-old Irishman in Ireland.
