Why Shane Duffy left Celtic's Dubai training camp early as defender jets back to UK

Shane Duffy has left Celtic’s Dubai training camp for family reasons.

The on-loan Brighton centre back flew to London from the United Arab Emirates last night after just one day of training with Neil Lennon’s squad.

The club have come in for heavy criticism for jetting off to the Middle East in the midst of the Covid pandemic.

The Scottish Government said yesterday that they expect the Scottish FA to take a closer look at the trip, although Celtic insists that they were given the green light to travel by Government officials.

It’s not thought that Duffy is on the verge of cutting his loan spell short however, and is set to remain at Celtic Park until the end of the Scottish Premiership season.

The Republic of Ireland has had a tough time of it since moving north and has struggled to nail down a starting spot after some less than impressive defensive displays.

Celtic insists he won’t be leaving this month, although it’s understood there is interest in the stopper from the English Championship.

Nottingham Forest manager Chris Hughton is a big fan of Duffy after managing him at The Amex Stadium.
