Why Sergio Aguero loved playing against Newcastle

Sergio Aguero has been forced to retire from football after a heart problem was discovered after he only managed five appearances for his new club Barcelona.

Newcastle United fans will remember Aguero painfully - due to the many goals he scored against the Magpies - however they would surely admit that Aguero is one of only a few Premier League strikers who could hold a candle to Alan Shearer when it comes to playing in this league.

In fact, Aguero's record against Newcastle is better than a goal a game - he managed to score 15 times in 14 Premier League fixtures. His last game against the club came in December of 2020 and was one of only 5 Premier League games that he didn't score against the club.

Of course, the most famous performance came in 15/16 as he scored 5 in one game as City put Newcastle to the sword at the Etihad. The striker went on to score 24 Premier League goals that season.

He also scored a hat-trick in a 3-1 against the Magpies in 17/18 as he plundered 21 goals to fire his side to the title.

In fact, Aguero's record was so imperious against Newcastle that 20/21 was the only season in which he did not score a single goal against the club, apart from 19/20 where he was injured for both fixtures.

The Manchester City legend had left the Etihad in the summer after allowing his contract to run down and had intended on linking up with Lionel Messi in Catalonia but Barcelona's star man was forced to leave the club due to financial issues prohibiting his signing of a new deal.

Aguero still intended to play on for his new club though, before he was rushed to hospital during a 1-1 draw with Alaves and the condition which would force his retirement was discovered.
