With the start of free agency and the new league year just under a month away, teams have a number of decisions to make — most importantly, which players they will fight for to keep on their rosters.
While the NFL and NFLPA agreed to an increase of $5 million on the salary cap floor for 2021, the Seattle Seahawks are one of the few teams that have very little extra cash to spare.
One of Seattle’s toughest questions will be whether to re-sign starting running back Chris Carson or his backup last season, Carlos Hyde.
NFL analyst David Carr is one of those firmly in Hyde’s camp.
“It may come as a surprise that I’m taking Hyde over Chris Carson here, but while the latter may be more explosive, Hyde has experience in the offensive system new offensive coordinator Shane Waldron runs,” Carr writes.

Carr acknowledges quarterback Russell Wilson’s desire to be involved in personnel decisions and the team’s overall need for offensive linemen. Yet he asserts that Hyde’s experience could boost the Seahawks toward their next Super Bowl run.
“Averaging 4.4 rushing yards per carry in limited touches last season, the 30-year-old could pair well with Rashaad Penny, who has one more year on his rookie contract, and give Pete Carroll the more efficient rushing attack he’s looking for,” Carr said.
The decision could become clearer for Seattle once the official salary cap total is announced.
