Why Seahawks could stay put in round 1 of this year’s NFL draft

Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider and his staff are busy tightening up their draft board, but with a league-low four selections this year, finding a way to recoup the missing picks might not be as easy as it seems.

As of now, Seattle has just one selection in the first, third, fourth and fifth rounds. While Schneider would love to add more draft capital, with such an impressive class this season, the Seahawks could very well stay put on day one.

“It’s safe to say, but it’s a darn good draft, so I could see a very good player being there for us at 21,” Schneider said Monday during an interview on 710 ESPN Seattle. “Then the other part of it is everybody’s like, ‘well, they always like to go back,’ but you have to find a partner, you have to negotiate within a specific amount of time, so it’s not like an easy thing just to move back.

“We’d love to pick more than four times, though, it’s just going to be how do you do it?”

The majority of recent mock drafts have the Seahawks selecting heavy on defense this April. Safety and cornerback are two positions of need, but Schneider sees a chance to add talent to the defensive line.

“It’s really at the top with the defensive line, it really stands out,” Schneider continued. “I haven’t seen this before, where you’re looking up at the first round and there’s a number of – it’s like what flavor ice cream do you like, you know what I mean? You want a big run-stuffer? You want a quick three-technique? You want five edge rushers?”

Seattle might have only four picks to play with in this year’s draft, but after a successful start to free agency, the Seahawks could be awarded up to four additional compensatory selections in 2020.
