Why Scott McTominay starts for Manchester United vs West Ham

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he has no hesitation about putting Scott McTominay back into action when Manchester United face West Ham this weekend.

United are back in Premier League action on Sunday afternoon when they travel to face the Hammers at the London Stadium and need a response after defeat to BSC Young Boys in midweek.

In order to avoid more dropped points, United have reverted to the safer axis of Fred and Scott McTominay in the base of their midfield despite the Scotland international having only just returned from groin surgery.

McTominay, 24, has missed the last four United matches through injury but has been thrown back into the line-up from the start on his return.

Speaking ahead of the match, Solskjaer explained his line-up for the match and outlined what he was looking for from his side during the clash.

"He's always been a physical monster and a specimen," Solskjaer told MUTV on McTominay. "He is fit. We want to get him going as quick as we can, he's missed a bit of football now but the operation was needed. Why not put him back in?"

When asked if he thought the midfield battle was going to be the deciding factor between the two sides this weekend the United manager added: "Midfield is always important of course, the battles, set-plays are always going to be important.

"I always say the game will always be decided in either box."
