Why Scott McTominay could be a future Manchester United captain

Former Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand believes that midfielder Scott McTominay is displaying all the right signs to one day become captain.

McTominay, who has been on United’s books since the age of five, has been a shining light in a tricky start to the campaign, with his performances in the centre of midfield not going unnoticed.

With that in mind, plus the fact that the 22-year-old scooped United’s Player of the Month award for October, Ferdinand has heaped praise on the Scotland international.

Though Ferdinand believes it is too early to say whether McTominay will definitely be a future United captain, he does believe that the Scot is heading in the right direction.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Ferdinand said: “I think it is too early to say that yet, but he is showing good signs. I think he is showing that he has got thick skin.

“The word ‘character’ is a huge element in any player’s make-up, that will enable him to become captain. You can see he has got that fire in his belly, he is a Manchester United boy through and through and has been there since he was five-years-old.

“He understands what it means to be a Manchester United player and they are important aspects to be a captain of Manchester United, so he is on the right track.”

Ferdinand was being quizzed on what he had made to United’s campaign so far and it was McTominay that he singled out for special recognition.

“I think a special mention has to go to someone like Scott McTominay, who has looked really good in the last few games,” added Ferdinand. “He looks like a really important member of the team, not just on the pitch but he seems to have a personality and the right character.

“He seems to fit the right profile that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking for to add to this team.”
