Why James Trafford is in Man City squad to face Sheffield United

Academy goalkeeper James Trafford has been named on the bench to face Sheffield United for Manchester City's Premier League game after Scott Carson sustained an injury in the warm-up

Carson, on a second season-long loan from Derby County had been bumped up to the bench after Zack Steffen was deemed not fit enough to be included in the matchday squad.

But the veteran stopper was replaced by Trafford as kick-off approached, less than 24 hours on from his appearance in City's FA Youth Cup win over Blackburn at St George's Park.

Carson is yet to make an appearance for City and has settled in a role as the No.3, although regularly travels with the squad and has been on the bench for Champions League games this season with a bigger squad allowed.

Nathan Ake returns to the squad after missing the last three games with injury but it is still too soon for him to come back from a problem that has kept him out since the first match of the season at Wolves. Tommy Doyle missed the FA Youth Cup semi-final win on Friday but is training with the youngsters ahead of Monday's final.

City are able to name their two preferred centre-backs together for just the second time in the league this season. Aymeric Laporte and Ruben Dias lined up against Leeds before the international break but an injury to the Frenchman has prevented the pairing from getting more minutes together in the competition, although they did start at Marseille in midweek as they kept a clean sheet.

The Blues can move into the top half of the table with a win, although Pep Guardiola insists that Sheffield United will be an extremely difficult challenge despite their slow start to the season.
