Why Ruby, 6, called 999 to tell police 'Take my mummy to jail'

Little Ruby Pitchford left her mum stunned after she asked police to "take mummy to jail".

The six-year-old dialled the emergency 999 number minutes after the pair had been play-fighting at home.

Vicky Pitchford was upstairs tidying her bedroom when her daughter handed her the phone, saying she had called Staffordshire Police.

The 29-year-old, from Bentilee, Stoke, said: “We do a lot of play-fighting together. As she was trying to get away, she was crawling across the floor, so I got her foot and dragged her towards me and that was that. I thought she was over it," the Stoke Sentinel reports.

“When we were done I went upstairs to clean my bedroom and Ruby walked in and said the police were on the phone. I was like 'whatever' because I didn’t believe her.

“She put the phone on loudspeaker and I heard a man say 'hello' so I took the phone off her and saw she had actually dialled 999.

“I spoke to the male copper and he said 'your daughter told us to take you to mummy jail' because you grabbed her foot.

“I couldn't believe it when I heard the voice on the other end of the phone - and Ruby was running around the room laughing.”

The youngster knows how to dial 999 because her mum has panic attacks. The officer on the other end of the line "quizzed" Vicky before Ruby confirmed nothing was wrong.

Vicky added: “The operator was laughing. We were hysterical and I was laughing for a long time.

“I have a lot of panic attacks so I have taught her to dial 999 because sometimes there are times I can’t breathe so she may have to call them, but this time she took it to her own advantage.

“In a way I am proud she has remembered how to dial the number, although it’s a bit silly.

“If I ever need help, she is there and able to get that help for me and that is why she has got her own phone as well.

“When we came off the phone to the police I had a word with her that she has got to take the number seriously because it is for emergencies only.”
