Why Ruben Dias and Sergio Aguero are on the Man City bench to face Tottenham

Pep Guardiola says Sergio Aguero could come off the bench to make a first appearance since the New Year win at Chelsea after he was named in the matchday squad to face Tottenham.

Aguero has struggled with injuries and Covid issues this season, with two carefully-managed comebacks from injury curtailed by new problems. His last appearance was the first game of the new year at Chelsea, and he remained on the bench for the Carabao Cup win at Manchester United later that week.

Now, he's back in training after a period of isolation, and is fit enough to feature on the bench for the first time in 11 City outings.

And speaking ahead of City's home fixture with Spurs, Guardiola said the decision to call him up was made after he made it through a third training session with his teammates.

"I would love it," Guardiola said when asked if Aguero could feature at some point against Spurs.

"Important is he's already back training, last 2-3 days. Yesterday after training we said 'why don't you come to the bench and see the dynamics of the game, after we'll see."

Also on the City bench was Ruben Dias, who doesn't start a Premier League game for the first time since joining the club. Dias missed the midweek trip to Swansea with a fever, and although he was back in training on Friday, Guardiola explained he is not fully fit to start.

"Ruben didn't train last week, just yesterday the first day," he explained. "He had the fever, didn't feel good. Aymer [Laporte] played really good at Swansea and plays today."
