Why Rio Ferdinand wants to see Sheffield United promoted over former club Leeds United

The race for the automatic promotion spots is about to enter it's final phase, with Sheffield United heading into against Ipswich knowing a win will mean they are all but assured of a top two place.

This comes after Leeds United lost back-to-back matches for only the second time this season over Easter weekend, going down to Wigan and Brentford to surrender the initiative.

Plenty of former Whites players have had their say on who they would like to see promoted, with the majority wanting to see Marcelo Bielsa's side end a 15-year absence from the top flight.

But while former Whites defender Rio Ferdinand does want to see Leeds go up, he has thrown his weight behind Sheffield United's top two charge.

"I'd love to see Leeds in the Premier League," he told joe.co.uk.

"Their fan base, the passion they've got, they'd be a great addition. It's where they should be. I had a great time there, so it'd be fantastic for me to see them there," he continued, before turning his attention to the club's Yorkshire rivals.

"I'd like them to go up through the play-offs, because my mate [Chris Wilder] is the manager of Sheffield United so I'd like him to go up, but Leeds to go up through the play-offs."

With Ferdinand already a persona non grata at Elland Road following his 2002 move to Manchester United, these comments will hardly get the Leeds fans back on side.
