Why residents are protesting in St Pauls this weekend

"Peacful" protesters in St Pauls will be calling for new 5G mast to “come down” this weekend.

The demonstration will take place today (August 23) between the new 5G mast on Newfoundland Road and St Pauls Community Sports Academy.

Nwanyi Aduke, who lives a few streets down from the mast said she understands it was approved by the council but feels “disappointed” the community was not consulted.

She said: “The fact that mast has gone up means that it sets the precedent for more to go up. We need to work all together to make sure that this never happens again.

“The new one has to come down. Our community is already gentrified and still going through that process.

"We have very little resources and amenities, which are under attack right now as we speak.

"If we do not collectively come together and argue to sustain and retain what we've got we can be sure the remaining resources and the shape of our community will change over the next - I say less than a year.

"I want to encourage and mobilise people of St Pauls to wake up and look at whats going on around you.

"Do not sit and say 'somebody else is doing it'. Do not sit and not care about your community because whatever changes are taking place, it will surely effect yourself and if it doesn't get you, it's going to get your children's children.

"We do have a voice and we want to be heard."

The demonstration will start around 2pm and is being organised  by the Kuumba Centre and supported by The Malcolm X Centre, Stop 5G and residents in the area.

Water bottles will be provided and organisers encourage attendees to wear face masks and comply with social distancing guidelines.
