Why referee Michael Oliver was right to show red card to Ainsley Maitland-Niles at Leicester

Arsenal were left bemoaning an early referee decision during their 3-0 defeat to Leicester City on Sunday afternoon.

The Gunners were defeated by the Foxes with Ainsley Maitland-Niles shown a red card by Michael Oliver after picking up two yellow cards in the first half of the contest.

Maitland-Niles was dismissed for two fouls with the second booking for a late challenge on James Maddison, having been cautioned earlier for a foul on Ben Chilwell.

But replays showed there was no contact between Maitland-Niles and Maddison.

'Hopeless, pathetic' - BBC pundits deliver scathing assessment of Arsenal's display at Leicester

And former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has now given his verdict on the decision.

He told Sky Sports: "The first yellow he can have no complaints as if Ben Chilwell gets past him, he has yards of space to run into. I have to hold my hand up and say I thought it was a second yellow (for the Maddison incident).

"From the referee's viewpoint, it looks like he lunges in and takes him down, but when you see it from the other side, he hasn't actually caught him, so he's unlucky.

"But I can understand what the referee's seen and why he's given it."

Arsenal boss Unai Emery spoke about the decision after the game and he said he felt the red card was harsh.

“I don't agree with the first yellow card. I don’t think it was a yellow card. I think maybe the first yellow card is not his fault.

“It was just seven minutes into the game and I don’t agree, but I respect the referee.”
