At 3pm today until 23:59 Monday, all sports channels across the entire Reach network will join the boycott of social media as part of the campaign against online hate.
The SFA, SPFL, Scottish Women’s Football and PFA Scotland, plus many of their counterparts across the UK, as well as organisations from cricket, rugby, cycling and horse racing are staging the boycott.
As journalists this is not a decision we take lightly but we believe it is important that Reach titles add their voices to the calls for greater action against the epidemic of online hate and be a force for good in the communities we serve.
In Scotland we have recently witnessed first hand the damaging effects taunts and slurs can have on the beautiful game when Glen Kamara was subjected to racial abuse from Slavia Prague defender Ondrej Kudela in the Europa League.
The incident itself was sickening enough but to see the torrent of abuse Rangers' black players were subjected to after the game only reinforces the need to take significant action in a bid to eradicate this poison from the sport we all love.
But it goes beyond one team or individuals with players from all clubs subjected to discrimination.
As the nation's biggest sports publisher we will of course continue to create the outstanding sports content – from Premier League to local matches – for which we are famous. We just won't be sharing this content on social over the weekend.
