Why recent history promises goals between Huddersfield Town and Leeds United

Leeds United will be targeting a sixth successive Championship victory when they lock horns with Huddersfield Town at the John Smith's Stadium on Saturday lunchtime, kick-off 12.30pm.

The Whites will make the short hop across the county to face Danny Cowley's Terriers looking to build on last Saturday's emphatic 4-0 win over Middlesbrough.

Saturday's meeting between the clubs will be the 78th competitive match-up between these two Yorkshire sides, with Leeds currently holding the upper hand, after coming out on top on 32 occasions.

And it would be fair to say that Leeds will fancy their chances of taking their tally of wins over the Terriers to 33 due to their impressive run of recent form.

But whilst Leeds, rightfully so, will head into the game as favourites, not only because of their form but also because of the Terriers' recent struggles, nothing can be a guarantee in a local derby as fierce as this one.

However, there is one thing that has become accustomed to being a guarantee when these two meet on Huddersfield's patch: goals. In the last six meetings between the two clubs at the John Smith's Stadium, a total 24 goals have been scored, meaning an average of four goals per game have been scored.

During that six-game sequence, Leeds have emerged victorious on three occasions; winning 3-0 in November 2015, running out 2-1 winners in January and 4-2 victors in December 2012.

But even in the games that Leeds haven't claimed maximum points, they have scored five goals at the John Smith's.

To add an ever bigger picture to just how frequent goals are in this fixture, at both the John Smith's and Elland Road, you have to go back to 1985 for the last goalless stalemate and only 12 clean-sheets have been recorded by both teams combined in the last 25 fixtures.
