Why Real Madrid must raise £270m from player sales this transfer window

Real Madrid will have to raise as much as £270 million from player sales this summer in order to comply with Financial Fair Play rules, according to reports in Spain.

Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane is in the process of rebuilding his squad following a disappointing season which saw the Spanish giants finish third in La Liga and fail to make it past the last 16 of the Champions League.

The Frenchman has wasted no time improving his team and has completed two big-money signings in the space of the week to join the earlier arrivals of Eder Militao and 18-year-old Rodrygo.

Los Blancos agreed a £60m deal to sign Eintracht Frankfurt striker Luka Jovic before completing the signing of Chelsea star Eden Hazard for a fee that could rise as high as £130m.

That is believed to be only the start of a busy summer, with Zidane's spending expected to reach as much as €400m (£356m) before the transfer window closes - with Ferland Mendy, Paul Pogba and Christian Eriksen among those linked with moves to the Bernabeu.

However, while Real continue to spend, the threat of FFP means that the club will also have to offload some big names in the coming weeks

If Madrid's total spending does reach as high as £356m, AS reports that the club will have to raise £270m (€300m) in order to balance the books and avoid punishment from UEFA.

According to the Spanish publication, the La Liga giants believe the sales of outcasts James Rodriguez, Gareth Bale and Mateo Kovacic will bring in the most significant funds.

Rodriguez has recently concluded a two-year loan spell at Bayern Munich, while Croatia international Kovacic spent the previous season on loan at Chelsea.

Bale is another player who is unlikely to be at the Bernabeu when the transfer window slams shut, with the club thought to be looking to get the former Tottenham winger off their books.

However, it is also reported that the trio would be unwilling to leave if it means taking a pay cut, which could make it difficult for the club to find potential suitors.

It is claimed that Sergio Reguilon and Dani Ceballos could also be casualties of a summer clearout, while Isco and Martin Odegaard have already been linked with potential departures.
