Why Real Madrid chief Florentino Perez pulled plug on David Silva transfer

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez allegedly scrapped a potential £30million deal for his club to sign Spanish playmaker David Silva in 2010 because of his party lifestyle.

It may come as a surprise to many to hear of Silva portrayed in such a way, with the playmaker appearing to be a model pro during his time in England, but Perez was said to be concerned about the 33-year-old's 'drinking' and 'partying' lifestyle.

Silva played for Valencia at the time and was impressing in La Liga, leading for him to be linked to some of the biggest clubs in the world.

In an article published by The Athletic it was alleged that Perez was so wowed by the then 24-year-old's performance during a match against Madrid that he told a member of staff: "Take the suitcase to the locker room, because next year David will be with us."

However, just when a deal looked like it would be done Perez pulled the plug because he did not feel Silva behaved with the "required dignity" to pull on one of the famous white shirts of Madrid.

Silva in the end sealed a move to Manchester City in the same year and has gone on to become a legend at the club, winning a total of 12 trophies at the club, including four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and four League Cups.

He announced over the summer that this would be his final season at the club, and he will no doubt be aiming to go out with a bang, perhaps with the one major trophy that has so far eluded him during his spell at City- the Champions League.

Silva has featured in each of City's three league games so far this season, and created two assists in their 3-1 win over Bournemouth last weekend.
