Why Rayo Vallecano fans were chanting about Liverpool as extraordinary season continues

With a 2-0 win on Monday over Almeria, Rayo Vallecano continued their extraordinary La Liga season and their understandably bullish fans had a surprise message for Liverpool.

The Madrid outfit are fifth in the Spanish top flight, meaning they are currently on track to qualify for the UEFA Europa League next term. Things could yet get better for Rayo too, as Atletico Madrid are just three points ahead of them in fourth, which is a Champions League qualifying spot.

While only 20 games of the season have gone, the supporters at the Estadio de Vallecas are already dreaming of European action next term and based on their chants towards the end of the game, would seemingly fancy their chances against Jurgen Klopp's Reds.

The fans were chanting what roughly translates as 'next year, Rayo-Liverpool' in the final stages of their win over Almeria.

Manager Andoni Iraola has been crucial to Rayo's surge up the table with what is a modest squad. Stars of the show for them this season include former Newcastle United defender Florian Lejeune and winger Isi Palazon, with veteran striker Radamel Falcao a frequent option from the bench.

Although El Tigre - who was a flop at Manchester United and Chelsea after stunning spells with Atletico Madrid and Porto - would no doubt relish a runout against this current Liverpool defence, the meeting between the two clubs could remain a fantasy largely due to the struggles of the Reds.

The 3-0 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Saturday saw Klopp's side slump to 10th in the table and in desperate need of a result in next week's Merseyside derby against Everton.
