Why rainbow paintings are popping up in North East windows during coronavirus crisis

Colourful pictures of rainbows have started appearing in windows amid the coronavirus outbreak - and this is the reason why.

Pupils across the country are being encouraged to put up the paintings to "spread hope" during this troubled time.

Schools are now closed to children of non-key workers, with thousands of youngsters trying to continue their learning at home.

One of the ways being used to try and keep morale up in communities is by painting rainbows.

And drawings have been popping up around Newcastle and North Tyneside, some with words like "hope", "be kind" and "keep singing a rainbow".

One youngster wrote: “If you want the rainbow, then you gotta put up with the rain.”

Gosforth, Cullercoats and Whitley Bay are among the areas where paintings have been seen.

On Etal Avenue, in Whitley Bay, messages have been written in chalk on the pavement, urging people to “smile” and “be happy”.

A spokesman for Grange First School in Newcastle told the BBC: "We are hoping to spread our cheerful windows campaign as wide as possible.

"Signs are going up in windows all over our area and beyond and will really help maintain morale for children (and families) in these difficult times."

Angela Ruthven, whose son Harrison made a rainbow, said it was "a truly wonderful idea while we are all facing such worries with our health, our jobs and children's education".

"This has offered a positive approach," she said.

"It's bringing families together at home to create a rainbow, making people smile if they are spotted in windows. It's bringing our wonderful school and even the world together.

"It's showing that we are all in this together."

Scores of people across the nation have joined 'The Rainbow Trail' and are posting their pictures on social media.
