Why Raheem Sterling deserves Player of the Year over Liverpool FC stars

The rise of Raheem Sterling has been remarkable. The young Englishman has taken the world by storm due to his impressive season in a City shirt. Sterling has now got 23 goals and 16 assists so far this season and has become a regular in the starting line-up.

Sterling scored a brace in the Champions League game which saw City knocked out by Spurs. The winger thought he had scored a third in the 93rd minute which would’ve taken City through to the semi-final, however it was ruled offside by VAR.

Sterling signed for City in 2015 for £44million from Liverpool. Sterling was one of Liverpool’s most important players as he and Liverpool finished runner-up in the league in 2014.

His move to City made him the most expensive English player at just 20 years old, placing huge expectations on his shoulders.

Last season in City Blue, Sterling scored a total of 23 goals and assisted 17 times in 46 appearances, helping City to complete the domestic double of the league and league cup.

Many cited Sterling’s last season stats as a one off but Sterling has proved his doubters wrong on numerous occasions by having a wonderful season and taking City close to a second league title in just as many years.

Sterling won the Carabao Cup for City earlier in the season as his final spot kick into the roof of the net decided the game against Chelsea. The Englishman has been very influential for City and has kept the highly-rated Leroy Sane and Riyad Mahrez out of the starting line-up for City. Sterling’s superb season has put him right into the mix for being voted as the PFA Player of Year alongside Liverpool’s Virgil Van Djik and Sadio Mane.

The England international deserves the accolade due to the season he has had both on and off the pitch.

Many football fans have praised Sterling’s maturity in a City shirt amidst the unjust targeting he has received in the media. Sterling has become a role model for many young kids aspiring to be footballers with his quality, passion and sense of sportsmanship - the PFA award is the least he deserves.
