'Why put them at risk?' Edinburgh Live readers react as Scots told no guising this Halloween

With new Scottish Government guidance announced today stating that adults and children should avoid guising this Halloween, we asked our readers what they thought.

Hundreds got in touch via our Facebook page to share their views, with some in full agreement with the judgement in order to stop the risk of spreading coronavirus between households.

Some were less certain, questioning why kids couldn't be allowed to take part in the Halloween tradition - even with some changes to protect them and their neighbours.

One of the most popular suggestions was instead of giving out treats at the door, a pumpkin full of sweets could be left outside for kids to safely help themselves to.

Others suggested guisers should only visit the houses of those they know, ensuring social distancing and not going inside.

Mimi Mitchell wrote: "It's outside, they all go to school [together], sweets left on fence, wave to them from window, no contact, wheres the harm?"

Jane Wilson added: "I’m personally not a fan of Halloween... but this is just stupid. They’re closer to people at school than standing at someone’s door. Poor kids. Looks like I’ll need to eat all my sweets myself."

Susan said: "My door will have sweets outside and as long as there’s no big crowds I don’t see what the problem is."

But others were clear that they thought it was the right decision to be made by Nicola Sturgeon's government, who said that they thought door-to-door guising presented an "avoidable" risk of spreading coronavirus.

Sarah Newman said she agreed with the decision, and instead would spend the night watching spooky films with her children.

Steven said people would have to hold on until next year: "Unfortunately, like the majority of things, it’s just going to have to take a hit this year. Once we have a vaccine we can live with Covid like the other virus led bodies out there. Hold tight folks..."

But Marc said he thought young people had "suffered enough" because of the pandemic.

"Definitely not. Kids under 12 don't need to socially distance and they won't be going into others houses. They've suffered enough without the fun of this being taken from them as well. We for certain will have our treats ready for the kids coming round," he said.
