Why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle called daughter Lilibet in sweet nod to The Queen

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have named their beautiful new baby girl after her grandmother The Queen.

Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex gave birth to a 7lb 11oz daughter, Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, on Friday in California following months of speculation about her birth date and possible name.

Calling their child LIlibet has a very special meaning.

It is The Queen's family nickname and strikes an emotional chord with the family.

Princess Elizabeth was called "Lilibet" by only very close family.

It's a nickname she got because it's claimed when she was younger, she couldn't pronounce her own name.

Her father, King George VI, used to say: "Lilibet is my pride. Margaret is my joy."

As a young royal. The Queen would sign letters using the shortened version of Elizabeth.

In one thank you note to her grandmother, Queen Mary, she wrote: "Darling Granny.

"Thank you very much for the lovely doll's house. I do love it, and I have unpacked the dining room and the hall.

Love from Lilibet xxx."

It is said that Prince Philip also used the name affectionately, and no one else in the royal family really called the Queen Lilibet, meaning it would sadly no longer be used after he died.

Instead The Queen’s family have other sweet names to use for her from 'mummy' and 'granny' to 'Gan-Gan'.

Now that Meghan and Harry have called their daughter the name Lilibet, and Lili for short, the moniker will once again be used in Royal circles.

Hearing the name spoken out loud once again will no doubt leave The Queen teary eyed.

The new arrival is a little sister for Archie, who was born in 2019, and a new cousin for Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
