Why Premiership footballer Chris Basham put a shift in at Gateshead McDonald's

He was on the pitch at the weekend as his team Sheffield United took on Watford in the Premier League but footballer Chris Basham has also been putting a shift in in a very different environment entirely.

Chris, who hails from Washington, took a trip down memory lane when he went back to his first employer - McDonald’s in Gateshead, to rediscover the skills he learnt whilst working at the Golden Arches restaurant.

The Blades defender helped out at the Felling Bypass restaurant for a day and revealed how the skills he learnt whilst working at McDonald’s, such as goal setting, teamwork and a strong work ethic, propelled him to succeed in her footballing career.

The visit was part of the Made At McDonald’s campaign, which brings to life the opportunities and skills that a first job, part time job, or lifelong career at McDonald’s can provide.

Reflecting on the skills he learnt when he took his first ever job at the McDonald’s at 16, the video above shows Chris inside the restaurant chatting to current employees and recalling how his first job helped him set goals   and develop key leadership and teamwork skills.

Chris  said, “McDonald’s was my first ‘proper job’ and I have always credited it with giving me those soft skills that you need in any career.

"McDonald’s strengthened my view of how important teamwork is, and I also learnt more about myself; for example, the need to set myself goals and have a clear path to progression, which has helped influence how I train.

"It’s been nice to be back, remembering the skills I learnt that set me up for life.”

Other famous faces supporting the campaign include Olympian and ex-England player Kelly Smith and former star of Channel 4’s Tattoo Fixers Jay Hutton, who also began their careers at McDonald’s and credit the restaurant for giving them skills for life.
