Why posting holiday pictures on Facebook and Instagram could leave you out of pocket

It's something many of us will do without really giving it a second thought.

We're away from the daily grind and kicking back enjoying some sun and sand – why wouldn't you want to show off to your pals with a few social media posts?

Well, there's actually a pretty good reason.

Every summer you'll see the warnings from police about not alerting would-be crooks to the fact you're away from home, and the house is lying empty.

But it turns out posting photos on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter could also even invalidate your home insurance.

Our sister site North Wales Live reports that police are urging people to wait until they get back to post their pictures, and avoid checking in at the airport.

Research shows that a large proportion of home raids take place when the homeowner is away, and alerting thieves to this can invalidate insurance policies with some companies.

Many providers say homeowners need to take "reasonable care" over their property, and posting holiday updates may be a breach.

The AA said that "in the event of a claim some insurers may see the updates as reckless, and proof you weren't being careful enough to protect your home".

They added that providers could even void the insurance – something which has become more common in the US.
