Why Porto were the one club who wanted to face Liverpool in the Champions League

Pep Lijnders believes Porto were the only team left in the Champions League who wanted to face Liverpool in the quarter-finals.

The Reds' assistant boss has warned that Sérgio Conceição’s side will be fired up and intent on “revenge” when they walk out at Anfield on Tuesday night.

Liverpool thrashed Porto 5-0 at the last 16 stage last season but Lijnders insists the Portuguese champions will be a tougher nut to crack this time around.

Lijnders, who spent seven years coaching at Porto's Academy before joining the Reds in 2014, told the Times: “There was only one club in the last eight that wanted us and that was Porto.

Jurgen Klopp criticised for treatment of Liverpool midfielder and told to expect a bid for star man

“All the others in the last eight wanted to avoid us, but Porto will love the chance to go again against us.

“I know it because of their mentality. Sergio is a motivational coach and he will use that. Motivate is not the right word. It is revenge. They want to set something right.”
