Why police were stopping vehicles in Avonmouth

Police stopped more than 40 motorists in Avonmouth as they clamped down on dangerous vehicles.

During the operation yesterday (March 2), an 18-tonne heavy goods vehicle was found being driven on a car licence.

Five vehicles were identified to be in a dangerous condition, two drivers were caught using their mobile phone and one vehicle was carrying an insecure load which was 85 per cent in excess of its legal weight limit.

In total, officers detected:

  • 5 vehicles found to be in a dangerous condition
  • 10 dangerous defects
  • 9 defective tyres
  • 7 lighting offences
  • 6 overweight loads
  • 3 excess speed offences
  • 2 licence offences

PC Wayne Carhart of the Roads Policing Unit said: “This was another hugely successful day of partnership action, in which 76 per cent of vehicles stopped were found to be breaching the law.

“These results are truly frightening and demonstrate that these operations are highly important to promote road safety.

“In two years, more than 100 dangerous vehicles have been taken off the road thanks to the proactive team efforts of all involved.”

Yesterday (March 2) was the tenth day of action for Operation Trader, with more than 600 offences detected since it began two years ago.
