Why police were in Castle Park today

Police officers were seen throughout Castle Park this afternoon (August 7) as they made three drug-related arrests.

Around a dozen officers visited the Bristol city centre park this afternoon in a bid to tackle drug offences.

One person sent a Facebook message to Bristol Live at 5.37pm to highlight the police presence.

They wrote: "Castle park is crawling in [sic] police officers. Something has happened!"

When a Bristol Live reporter went to the scene at 5.45pm, he could see a riot van and a police car parked on Broad Weir, adjacent to the park.

Two officers, who wished to remain anonymous, explained they were on a pro-active patrol dealing with "drug supply and use".

They said around 12 officers had arrived at around 4pm and they had found the patrol "positive so far".

One said: "I think people welcome us being here to keep the park safe."

In a statement, an Avon and Somerset police spokesperson added: "We are carrying out a proactive patrol as part of Operation Remedy.

"One person has been arrested on suspicion of possession of drugs with intent to supply.

"Two people have been arrested on suspicion of possession of drugs."
