Why police vans were seen in Queen Square today

Several police vans have been spotted in Queen Square today (July 18).

There's an increased police presence at numerous locations across Bristol this week as Extinction Rebellion continues it's five-day protest.

Thousands of activists are taking to the streets of Bristol this week to raise awareness of the 'climate emergency'.

Throughout the past few days, protesters have caused disruption and delays throughout the city centre and blocked traffic on the M32 .

A police spokesman has confirmed the police vans were in Queen Square as part of a "briefing" for the Extinction Rebellion protest.


"Officers working on the protest are in Queen Square today for a briefing," he said.

The elected head of Avon and Somerset Constabulary previously Extinction Rebellion's decision to block the M32.

Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Sue Mountstevens said: "Protesters closing the M32 has crossed the line and adversely impacted on many residents who need to get to work, pick up kids or get to hospital appointments.

"We are spending taxpayers' money. This operation will cost upwards of £300,000.

"The group did have an understanding with the council and the police. It was very much about Bristol Bridge being closed . The M32 was not part of that."
