Why police helicopter was flying over Bristol

A police helicopter could be heard flying over Bristol on Thursday night.

Residents living in the east side of the city were able to hear the helicopter at around 8pm.

Avon and Somerset Police has now said the helicopter was flown in an attempt to trace a missing person search.

In a statement, the force said: "The National Police Air Service helicopter was used last night for a missing person search in Bristol.

"The woman was found safe and well by officers."

A resident in the Whitehall area of the city said she was walking her dog along the Bristol to Bath railway path near Owen square, in Easton, at around 8pm when she was approached by a police officer.

She said she was told a woman was missing in the area and was asked to contact police immediately if she saw the described woman.

Earlier this month, the police helicopter was launched after incidents were reported at both a Post Office in Weston-super-Mare and a supermarket in Burnham-on-Sea.
