Why police have been accused of breaking ‘golden rule’ over Ann Widdecombe murder

  • Devon & Cornwall Police is facing criticism for their handling of the investigation into the alleged murder of Ann Widdecombe , who was found dead with serious injuries at her Haytor residence on Thursday.
  • Jonathan Hall KC, the government ’s independent reviewer of terrorism , criticised the force for breaking an investigation 'golden rule' by steering the public away from a terrorism motive too early.
  • Counter-terrorism police have now taken the lead in the probe into Ms Widdecombe's death.
  • A 28-year-old man, initially arrested in Rotherham on Saturday on suspicion of murder, has since been re-arrested on suspicion of commissioning, preparing, or instigating acts of terrorism.
  • Home secretary Shabana Mahmood confirmed to the Commons that the arrested individual was not known to the Prevent counter-terrorism programme.
