Why police aircraft was circling over Arnold and Gedling last night

A police aircraft was dispatched to help locate a 'high-risk' missing person.

Residents just north of the city living in Arnold, Gedling and Woodborough reported seeing a twin-engine plane flying low over the area until just before midnight on January 12.

The aircraft belongs to the National Police Air Service and is dispatched when police forces need to find a target, usually at night when visibility is low.

It can use its thermal imaging cameras to easily locate a missing person or suspect in low light.

The aircraft, G-POLV, took off from Doncaster just after 9pm and returned to the same airport just after midnight.

Nottinghamshire Police had been searching for a missing woman at the time.

A spokesman for the force said: "The NPAS aircraft was up in that area to assist with the search for a missing person who was found.

"The person was found shortly before 12pm at 11.20pm."

The NPAS aircraft spent a significant amount of time near Gedling County Park.

A spokesperson for NPAS Midlands added: "Our aircraft was dispatched to support a Nottinghamshire Police incident to locate a high risk missing person."
